The WALT DISNEY COMPANY has announced it will make FROZEN 2 available early ‘during these challenging times’
Families in Australia will be able to stream the sequel to the mega-hit from Tuesday March 17 on the new streaming platform Disney+. The streamer launched November 19 last year and became an instant hit, amassing over 28 million subscribers worldwide.
Bob Chapek, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company said;
“‘Frozen 2’ has captivated audiences around the world through its powerful themes of perseverance and the importance of family, messages that are incredibly relevant during this time, and we are pleased to be able to share this heartwarming story early with our Disney+ subscribers to enjoy at home on any device,”
Disney+ will soon be the only place to watch most Disney-owned content when at the end of April the locally branded channel will be removed from Fetch TV.
The Disney Channel and Disney Jr were removed from Foxtel at the end of February.
What’s not clear is what is happening to local staff in Australia with the closure of those channels as Disney would not comment on possible redundancies.
Having worked at The Disney Channel from 1999-2000, I worked with an entire floor of people focused on the channels. That team included Programming, Marketing and Publicity. At the time a small production unit also made local shows.
Whether those people have been redeployed or made redundant is unclear, although the most likely scenario would be redundancies.
To make matters worse Australian kids have missed out on the big premiere of Zombies 2. If you don’t have children you won’t understand how big this made for TV movie is, but with its launch in the U.S. on February 14, many children (including my own) have been waiting for it to arrive in Australia.

TV Blackbox can reveal Zombies 2 will be available in April on Disney+.
The home of the mouse is intent of making Disney+ the biggest streaming service in the world by removing all of their content from other platforms, with a spokesperson telling TV Blackbox;
“Ultimately, Disney+ will be the exclusive streaming home for all content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic.”
There is no doubt today’s announcement will add to interest in the streaming service. Frozen 2 has earned a massive US$1.446 billion at the box office, so interest will be high.
The company says it the early release is to help families during these ‘challenging times’ with ‘some fun and joy during this challenging period’.
