YouTube TV Drops 3 Fox Regional Sports Networks Amid Contract Kerfuffle With Sinclair

  • Post Category:Other

After contract disputes came to a head late last month, YouTube TV has reached an agreement with telecom conglomerate Sinclair Broadcast Group that will see the skinny bundle service retaining 19 of the 21 Sinclair-owned Fox Regional Sports Networks (RSNs) that it already carried.

However, YouTube TV is dropping three RSNs: the YES Network, which is dedicated to the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Nets; Fox Sports Prime Ticket; and Fox Sports West (which carries games from the greater Los Angeles area). The changes went into effect yesterday, Variety reports. Both Fox Sports Prime Ticket and Fox Sports West are owned by Diamond Sports Group, a joint venture between Sinclair and Entertainment Studios. Sinclalir also owns an equity stake in YES.

“We value our ongoing relationship with YouTube TV,” Sinclair SVP and general counsel David Gibber said in a statement. “However, we are deeply disappointed with its decision to not carry certain RSNs. We offered competitive market terms but, ultimately, YouTube TV declined.”

In a separate statement, YES heatedly added: “YouTube TV, for its own selfish reasons and with total disregard for its YES customers, has refused to pay the market rate and accept market terms and conditions that other YES distributors have agreed to. In fact, YouTube TV sought a rate that was well below what other YES distributors are paying, and because YES keeps its word to all of its distributors, it could not make the deal.”

YouTube TV said that affected subscribers would receive a notification in the app soon. (YouTube TV offers upwards of 70 channels for $50 per month. The service last reported 2 million subscribers). “We do not take this decision lightly,” YouTube TV tweeted last month as its contract with Sinclair was set to expire, and the two companies reached a temporary agreement while attempting to hash out a new deal. “This is a reflection of the rising cost of sports content. You may have noticed several other TV services have also decided to remove Fox Regional Sports Networks from their lineups.”

Variety notes that the Fox RSNs — which Sinclair acquired from Disney in the wake of Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox due to regulatory requirements — were dropped by Dish Network and Sling TV last year, while Fubo TV axed the RSNs in January.

  • Post Category:Netflix

One of Netflix’s most beloved series is gearing up for its highly anticipated third season.

Yes, we’re totally talking about Ozark, and the the trailer for the new season is as bonkers as you would expect.

It’s six months later, the casino is up and running, but Marty and Wendy are fighting for control of the family’s destiny.

Ozark Season 3 Still

Marty preaches keeping the status quo. Aided by an alliance with Helen and drug cartel leader Omar Navarro, Wendy plots for expansion.

But when Wendy’s brother Ben comes into town, everyone’s lives are thrown into chaos.

The new season stars Emmy Award® Winner Jason Bateman, Emmy Award® Winner Laura Linney, Emmy Award® Winner Julia Garner, Emmy Award® nominee Janet McTeer, Tom Pelphrey, Sofia Hublitz, Skylar Gaertner, Charlie Tahan, Lisa Emery and Jessica Frances Dukes.

The series from MRC Television was created by Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams who executive produce alongside Jason Bateman, Chris Mundy and John Shiban.

Ozark has been a hit with critics and viewers since its inception, and has garnered a string of awards throughout its run.

Netflix will be hoping the third season ticks all of the boxes to keep the show up there as one of the best.

Ozark2

With a cast featuring Linney and Bateman, that won’t be difficult. Both actors could deliver a compelling performance no matter how sub-par a script is.

Marty and Wendy’s marriage looks to be on thin ice in the trailer, meaning that fans will get to see them turn to a couples couselor to help right the ship.

There are lots of twists and turn in the trailer, which you can watch at the bottom of the article.

Ozark Season 3 debuts March 27 — around 18 months after its second season debut.

Deputy Interviews: Will Cade Crack? Who’s Got it In for Bill? The Cast and Showrunner Weigh In!

  • Post Category:Netflix

Deputy was well represented at the SCAD aTVfest in Atlanta last week.

You know the cast is good when the lead isn’t on hand but you’re still highly entertained and filled with excitement about those present.

Those in attendance included Brian Van Holt (Cade), Bex Taylor-Klaus (Bishop), Shane Paul McGhie (Joseph), Danielle Moné (Charlie), and showrunner Kimberly Harrison.

Deputy Cast at SCAD aTVfest

For those of you who, like me, have been enjoying the new dynamic between Bishop and Cade on screen, you’ll be delighted to see that Van Holt and Taylor-Klaus were partners in the press line.

They both addressed the storylines specific to their characters as well as their impressions of each other’s storylines and performances, which is such a treat.

Taylor-Klaus shares thoughtful insight into Cade’s motivations as a father, and Van Holt shares how moved he has been by Taylor-Klaus as she portrays the Bishop storyline that’s very close to her heart.

Bex Taylor-Klaus at SCAD aTVfest 2020 - Deputy

They’re both as genuine and down to earth as we could have hoped, and they even had thoughts on the remainder of the season.

While Taylor-Klaus is excited for Bishop’s career in the majors to continue, Van Holt’s words were a little more distressing.

It seems all of the stress that Cade’s been under could possibly wear him down. Sure, it might be a tease that never comes to fruition, but Van Holt sure seemed wary of what lies ahead for the strong character he plays.

Watch:

McGhie and Moné were also partnered together just like they are on the show!

Moné is nowhere near as dodgy as the character she plays, and that’s a welcome relief.

In some detail, she explains Charlie’s motivations and why being Team Charlie doesn’t mean she’s a bad guy. In fact, it appears we’ll be discovering evidence to the contrary very soon.

She even knows what is in the envelope that Charlie gave to Jerry!

Danielle Moné at SCAD aTVfest 2020 - Deputy

McGhie defends his costar, especially from the Twitter fans who drag his on- and off-screen costar through the mud with fear she’s not good for Bill’s future.

Their conversation is so fun and relates to all of the characters, including Jerry.

And it’s so funny to hear McGhie pitch Joseph’s promotion as if getting into perilous situations is his character’s golden ticket to climb into the majors!

Find out what other tidbits they tease with the full interview, below.

And finally, we chatted with Showrunner Kimberly Harrison, who not only praised the series star, Stephen Dorff, for taking the character to the next level, and how exciting it is to be a female showrunner on a testosterone-driven show like Deputy.

But she dropped a bit of a bombshell on us.

Be very, very afraid, you guys. Are Charlie and Jerry the biggest threat to Bill’s future as sheriff?

All in all, it was a terrific showing for Deputy, and they seem like a terrific team behind the scenes, which shouldn’t be a surprise given how well they gel on screen.

Deputy Season 2 Episode 10, “School Ties,” airs tonight at 9/7c only on FOX.

ByteDance Launches Standalone Music Streamer In India Armed With Sony, Warner, T-Series Licensing Deals

  • Post Category:Other

After striking gold with TikTok in the U.S., Chinese tech goliath ByteDance is looking to take on Spotify in India with the launch of a music streaming app called Resso.

Techcrunch reports that Resso, which is now officially live in India, is ByteDance’s first standalone app dedicated to music streaming (whereas TikTok also features shorter lip-sync and dance videos set to popular tracks). The app is likely to roll out in other markets, given that ByteDance was also testing the platform in Indonesia — where it remains in beta status.

While ByteDance has secured licensing deals with two of the big three global record labels for Resso — including Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group — it has yet to onboard Universal Music Group, Techcrunch notes, likely due to that fact that ByteDance competitor Tencent is one of Universal’s biggest investors. That said, Resso has also inked deals local Indian music publishers for its formal launch, including YouTube giant T-Series.

Resso differentiates itself from Spotify with the real-time display of lyrics and the ability for users to post comments under individual songs and to create music-accompanied GIFs and videos. There is a free tier of service with ads and limited streaming quality, while a premium tier — including ad-free listening, downloads, and the ability to skip tracks — will cost roughly $1.60 on iOS and $1.35 on Android. (Resso apparently isn’t explaining the difference in pricing).

“India has the largest population of Gen Z as compared to any other country globally,” Hari Nair, Resso Indua’s head of music content and partnerships, told Techcrunch of the launch. “With the core of Resso’s target audience being Gen Z, it is only logical for Resso to make its debut in India. We will discuss additional markets when appropriate.”

ByteDance began piloting Resso in India — and Indonesia — in December, likely because it already has a massive TikTok usership in the former nation, to the tune of roughly 200 million total users. Techcrunch reports that Resso has been installed by 1 million users to date on both iOS and Android, with 600,000 hailing from India and the other 400,000 from Indonesia. That’s an impressive tally given that, as of December, YouTube Music had amassed 800,00 paying subscribers in India, making it the most popular music subscription service there, per Techcrunch.

Apple Drops Plans to Premiere New Apple TV+ Content at SXSW Due to Coronavirus Concerns

  • Post Category:Apple TV+

Apple’s plans to participate in the SXSW 2020 Film Festival to premiere new original Apple TV+ content have been dropped due to concerns over the ongoing COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak in the United States and other countries.

Variety reports has been planning to premiere three new Apple TV Plus originals at the 2020 SXSW Film Festival, including Spike Jonze’s documentary film “Beastie Boys Story.” Also was scheduled was a discussion of Apple’s “Little America,” with docuseries creators Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon. Those have now been canceled.

Apple is the latest company to pull out of SXSW. Other companies no longer participating in the festival include Amazon Studios, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Panasonic, SAP, Mashable and Intel.

Despite those firms canceling their SXSW-related activities and the circulation of a Change.org petition calling for SXSW to be canceled, SXSW organizers continue to insist the festival will still take place.

SXSW traditionally attracts over 100,000 folks from around the world and is so far the biggest event to not yet be canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Florida Girls and Flack Among Cancellations at Pop

  • Post Category:Netflix

Florida Girls and Flack will not air their second seasons on Pop TV after all.

Variety is reporting that Pop has canceled both series ahead of their second seasons.

Every episode of Flack Season 2 is already in the can, and it was set to debut later this month.

Melanie Field as Kaitlin

Florida Girls was renewed back in October 2019, and according to social media posts from the cast, it was in pre-production on its second season.

Also not going ahead is Best Intentions, a coming-of-age comey from American Pie’s Adam Herz.

The cancellation of these three shows leaves One Day at a Time and the soon-to-conclude Schitt’s Creek as the network’s sole scripted series.

The decision certainly came out of the left field, but there is hope for the canceled series.

Patty Guggenheim as Erica

The studios behind all three are shopping them to other networks, with Flack standing the best chance at finding a new home because production on Season 2 is already complete.

Another concern is that neither series broke out in the ratings, with Flack Season 1 averaging 48,000 viewers and a 0.01 rating and Florida Girls Season 1 averaging 69,000 viewers and a 0.03 rating.

While little is known about Best Intentions, it did have a series order, meaning it was probably in production when the cancellation became official.

“We are extremely disappointed in Pop’s decision to not move forward with Best Intentions,” a spokesperson for A+E Studios, which produces Best Intentions, said via statement.

Lacy Mosley as Jayla

“We have complete confidence in our creative team and are actively shopping the series to other outlets.”

There have been changes at the wheel of Pop ever since the ViacomCBS merger, but canceling shows that are already in the can is not the best news for scripted originals.

Pop is losing Schitt’s Creek in the coming months, while One Day at a Time, which was saved when Netflix canceled it, is slated to premiere.

WME Hires 2 Former FaZe Clan Execs As Gaming Agents

  • Post Category:Other

WME has hired two new agents in its digital department that will be exclusively focused on supercharging its gaming efforts.

The new agents are Conor Beesemyer and Richard Webb, The Hollywood Reporter reports, both whom formerly worked at leading esports organization FaZe Clan. Beesemyer served as a talent manager — and later partnerships manager — at FaZe, while Webb formerly served as the VP of sales.

At WME, both agents will seek to identify new gaming talent — including content creators and digitally-focused companies — with whom WME can partner. Beesemyer and Webb will report to WME digital co-heads Chris Jacquemin and Jad Dayeh. Prior to joining FaZe Clan, Beesemyer had worked in business development at ad company Kiosked, while Webb spent a decade at Major League Gaming.

Other movement within WME’s digital department — which reps gamers like Lannan ‘LazarBeam’ Eacott, Mark ‘Markiplier’ Fischbach, and more —  includes the promotion of digital agent Ben Davis to partner and the hiring of ICM Partners‘ Bennett Sherman as an agent, per the Reporter.
