Former Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins Exits Sony To Drive Amazon’s Digital Video Development

  • Post category:Other

Former Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins, who left the company in 2017 to become chairman of Sony Pictures Television, is now leaving Sony for an executive digital video role at Amazon.

Starting Feb. 24, Hopkins will serve as the ecommerce giant’s senior VP of Prime Video and Amazon Studios (its original content production arm), per The Hollywood Reporter. For now, part of his job will encompass responsibilities that previously belonged to Jeff Blackburn, Amazon’s senior VP of business and corporate development. Blackburn leads Amazon’s entertainment and advertising sectors, but is stepping away for a sabbatical that’ll last through early 2021.

When Hopkins moved to Sony in 2017, it was revealed that, among other streaming- and TV-related duties, he would work on Crackle, the company’s ad-supported streaming platform. However, Sony sold its majority stake in Crackle last year, and though it contributes some licensing and tech to keep revamped Crackle Plus running, the streamer’s new majority owner Chicken Soup for the Soul handles operations–effectively eliminating Hopkins’ part in the service.

At Hulu, Hopkins served as CEO from 2015 to 2017, and is credited with pushing the development of scripted originals like hugely popular The Handmaid’s Tale. During those two years, Hulu’s subscriber base grew by 200%, per THR, and it launched its skinny bundle Hulu with Live TV.

Prior to joining Hulu, Hopkins was a longtime Fox executive.

His new Amazon job was announced this morning during Sony executives’ quarterly meeting. In a staff memo, Blackburn wrote that Hopkins “has an extensive track record as a global business leader in media, film and TV–negotiating landmark content and distribution agreements, running marketing operations, leading product/tech teams, and overseeing production of breakthrough television content.”

Hopkins will report directly to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. He’s joining just as Amazon is deep in developing two of its biggest original series yet: its expensive Lord of the Rings original, and its adaptation of sprawling book epic The Wheel of Time.

As for what Sony will do absent Hopkins, it has chosen not to bring on a replacement for him. Instead, his responsibilities are being divided amongst: the company’s worldwide distribution president, Keith LeGoy, who will oversee anime production/distribution business Funimation as well as Sony’s network operations and programming and strategy group; and its president of U.S. production Jeff Frost, who will oversee first-run TV, digital production company Embassy Row, and Sony’s game show development team.

The ratings year has begun and who better to discuss TV with than your favourite people on the TV Blackbox podcast?!

While Rob’s away, the mice will play, and El Presidente is AWOL so Molk takes charge again (deal with it). The amazing Jo Casamento joins us Stephen Brook and Benjamin Norris, with Sarah Monahan returning for 2020. It’s like a slightly more functional family reunion than the Roy family.

Importantly we’ve some big items to deal with like the announcement of the host of Big Brother, the announcement of the host of Holey Moley, and the announcement that the Logies are changing the way nominations work for some reason. Oh, and Brooky gets super salty about James Warburton’s chances as CEO of Seven. So, you know, there’s that.

Each week the TV Blackbox team take you behind the scenes, wade through the PR spin and launch into the reality that is the Australian television business.

In this episode:

  • 4.46 – What do we make of Sonia Kruger as the host of Seven’s BIG BROTHER?

  • 11.09 – ANDREW O’KEEFE is back and ready to work.

  • 16.44 – DISNEY withdraw channels from FOXTEL and FETCH and build a serious streaming empire.

  • 24.06 – Seven confirm HOLEY MOLEY cast, including GREG NORMAN and ROB RIGGLE.

  • 30.02 – TV WEEK change the nominations and voting opportunities for the LOGIES for some reason.

  • 40.38 – Sarah casts her eye over this week’s HATCHES & DISPATCHES.

YouTube Kids’ Channel Cocomelon, Which Brings 3+ Billion Views Per Month, Expands Into Merch

  • Post category:Other

YouTube’s decision to strip personalized ads off every video that could attract young viewers has prompted one of its largest kids’ channels, Cocomelon, to finally expand into merch.

Cocomelon, known for its animated nursery rhymes, is one of the most-watched channels on all of YouTube. Launched in 2006 under original name ABCKidTV, it now has 72.8 million subscribers and brings upward of 3 billion views each month–more than triple the viewership of wildly popular Ryan’s World. But unlike the Kajis (who run Ryan’s World, all regularly star in the channel’s videos, and long ago pushed its online presence into a fleet of over 1,000 merch items), the family behind Cocomelon has never appeared on camera, and has historically rejected all offers of investment, sponsorship, translations of their videos, and merch opportunities.

Not anymore. Cocomelon’s creators, 55-year-old former commercial director Jay Jeon and his wife, a children’s book author who wishes to remain unnamed, are expanding its brand. They’ve agreed to start with albums of its most popular songs and a line of Cocomelon toys produced by Cabbage Patch Kids and Pokémon dolls creator Jazwares, Bloomberg reports. Jeon also told the outlet they’re considering the development of a full-length film.

He didn’t give details, but it’s likely the Jazwares toy line and the potential film will both feature J.J., the animated toddler who started appearing in the majority of Cocomelon’s videos in 2017. J.J., his two siblings, and his parents have become the faces of Cocomelon, representing the more than 20 employees who put the channel’s videos together from a studio in Irvine, Calif. Many of those employees are animators who work on its 40-minute, fully animated, 3-D-rendered videos. Those videos take around two months each to produce, and Cocomelon puts out at least four per month.

Jeon said Cocomelon has seen a decline in revenue since YouTube took away personalized ads, but wouldn’t say exactly how much it’s lost. Chris Williams, cofounder and CEO of pocket.watch–the digital kids’ studio that’s officially partnered with Ryan’s World and facilitated its merch deals–told the outlet top kids’ channels have lost between 50% and 60% of their ad revenue since the change took hold Jan. 1.

Jeon was clear that even with an expansion into merch, he doesn’t plan to change much about the channel. He, his wife, and their two sons won’t step into the limelight; instead, the fictional J.J. and his family will remain its central characters. There are some changes for J.J. on the horizon: new installments, developed with educators, will see him begin to attend school, Jeon said. Cocomelon also intends to add more characters to diversify the cast, as J.J. and his family are white.

Other than those tweaks, Jeon’s intention is to keep on keeping on. “I never look up the reason why something is popular or how I can please the YouTube algorithm. I know what matters. Stories matter,” he told Bloomberg. “I don’t want more viewership. I’m fine.”

NikkieTutorials Named Online Host For This Year’s ‘Eurovision Song Contest’

  • Post category:Other

Nikkie De Jager, a top beauty creator who came out as transgender in a widely-viewed YouTube video last month, has booked her next major gig.

De Jager, who hails from the Netherlands, will serve as the online host of the 65th annual Eurovision Song Contest. Her hosting duties will comprise appearances on Eurovision’s online platforms, a special backstage YouTube series featuring this year’s participating artists, red carpet duties during opening ceremonies, and appearances on all three live linear shows. This year’s contest will be hosted in Rotterdam, the second-biggest city in the Netherlands, following the victory of last year’s winner, Dutch artist Duncan Laurence. (The contest’s victor each year typically determines where the show will be held the following year).

Eurovision is an annual competition where participating countries — predominantly hailing from Europe — submit one original song to be performed live on TV (and the radio). Then, each participating country casts a vote (though not for themselves) in order to determine a winner. In addition to its viewership on TV, the Eurovision Song Contest is a huge draw on YouTube as well.

“From the moment Duncan Laurence won in Tel Aviv, I had only one wish: to be involved in the Dutch edition of the Eurovision Song Contest,” De Jager, who counts 13 million YouTube subscribers and 14 million Instagram followers, said in a statement. “When I was approached for this at the end of last year, I was so extremely honored. I am really looking forward to immersing myself in this unique experience for two weeks.”

De Jager announced the news in an Instagram video (below). This year’s Eurovision Song Contest kicks off on May 12, and will conclude on May 16.

Sex Education Renewed for Season 3 at Netflix

  • Post category:Netflix

Netflix is taking viewers back to the wonderful world of Sex Education.

The streamer has handed out a third season renewal to the British dramedy, which stars Asa Butterfield as a teenager who helps his peers with issues in their sex life.

In the second season, Otis found himself attracted to his girlfriend Ola more than ever, but there were various bumps in the road, especially when Maeve Wiley returned to the school after being expelled.

Making matters worse was the revelation that his mother, June Milburn, played by Gillian Anderson, would be stopping by the school to make sure the sex education curriculum was up to scratch.

Naturally, students remembered her as the woman who masturbated an aubergine in a video showed to the students in the first season.

June working at the school also put her on a collision course with her son as more details about what Otis had been doing came to light.

The expansive cast also includes Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Aimee Lou Wood, Alistair Petrie, Mimi Keene, Chaneil Kular, Simone Ashley, Tanya Reynolds, Mikael Persbrandt, Patricia Allison, and Anne-Marie Duff.

The second season wrapped with Otis leaving a voicemail to tell Maeve how she was the one for him. Upon arriving at her home, he was greeted by a new love rival, who had a thing for Maeve.

Whether Maeve will ever learn the truth about the voicemail has been left open for debate, with answers set to come during the third season.

The series managed to avoid the sophomore slump in its second outing, amassing an approval rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the season offering more of what worked, while also switching up some of the relationships.

Netflix has been vocal about the show’s success, revealing last year that the first season was on track to hit 40 million households.

No viewership data for Season 2 has been revealed, but given that the renewal is coming so soon after it launched, it’s likely it is another solidly rated season.

‘Lucas The Spider’ Strikes Distribution Deal For Long-Form Series At Cartoon Network

  • Post category:Other

Lucas, YouTube’s own adorably creepy spider, is coming to the small screen.

After rocketing to viral acclaim roughly three years ago and subsequently amassing 3.4 million subscribers — as well as spawning a hugely popular merch operation — the CGI animated property has inked two new TV distribution deals. Lucas The Spider was created by animator Joshua Slice and is voiced by his young nephew. The IP was acquired by Toronto-based live action and animation studio Fresh TV in March 2018. The latest deal was inked by Fresh TV and Cake — a London-based firm that produces, distributes, develops, finances development for kids’ and family entertainment properties.

The Cake deal will see a long-form Lucas cartoon come to TV networks Cartoon Network and Boomerang. Cake is handling international distribution for the forthcoming series, which is being produced by Fresh TV and Toronto’s WexWorks Media.

While the YouTube series sees Lucas discovering the world around him, the long-form project — comprising 78 episodes, each around seven minutes in length — will introduce longer narratives, new characters, and an expanded universe. Neither a premiere date nor title have been announced.

“A partnership with Cartoon Network is a significant step for Lucas. Strategically, they are the right partner for this project and together, we are looking forward to extending the brand and building Lucas into a global phenomenon,” Ed Galton, the CCO and managing director of Cake, said in a statement. “This latest collaboration is testament to the strength and success of the continuing relationship between Cake, Fresh TV, and Cartoon Network, which has spanned over 12 years.”

In addition to Fresh TV, Cake also works with Rovio Entertainment, Channel X, and Animation Collective on the worldwide distribution of their respective projects. Fresh, for its part, also produces the Total Drama franchise and the live-action shows Backstage and My Babysitter’s A Vampire.
