The raid by the Australian Federal Police on ABC, and the surrounding clampdown on freedoms of the press, was the biggest story of 2019 according to readers.
It took out the Story of the Year award in the TV Tonight Awards.
That was just ahead of Network 10 dumping all 3 MasterChef Australia judges, followed by Tom Gleeson’s Gold Logie win and speech.
Perhaps the bigger news is that Network 10 has narrowly taken out Best Free to Air Network, toppling ABC from the perch after a 7 year run. The two biggest networks are actually trailing the rest with site readers…
10 Chief Content Officer Beverly McGarvey said, “We are genuinely honoured to have been named Best FTA Network for 2019. I would like the thank the TV Tonight community not just for the support, but for keeping us honest over the years!
“All of us at 10, and our partners in the production community, will continue to work hard to bring great Australian content to our audiences, and we will continue to take some big swings and try very hard not to miss.
“Thanks again for this very special endorsement, it is a lovely way for us to start the year.”
FOX Showcase (rebranded from Showcase) retains its place as Best Pay TV Channel as does Netflix for Best Streaming Service -can it ever be toppled?
Sam Pang has again been voted Most Underrated Performer -both Have You Been Paying Attention? and The Front Bar were category winners this year.
Wild reality format The Circle claimed International Show We Need to See -a US version is now screening on Netflix having launched 3 days before voting closed.

“After their father is murdered under mysterious circumstances, the three Locke siblings and their mother move into their ancestral home, Keyhouse, which they discover is full of magical keys that may be connected to their father’s death,” reads the show’s official logline.
“As the Locke children explore the different keys and their unique powers, a mysterious demon awakens — and will stop at nothing to steal them. … The series is a coming-of-age mystery about love, loss, and the unshakable bonds that define family.”

Locke & Key was originally developed by Fox for the 2010-2011 TV season.
Despite not being given a series order, the network went on to show the pilot at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con because there was still such a big interest in it.
Hulu then ordered a new pilot in 2017 but declined to give it a series commitment in 2018, leaving producers scrambling to get the show on the air.
Netflix swooped in and ordered a brand new iteration of the series, leaving the Hulu adaptation dead in the water.
Yes, it’s been a long road to the screen for this project, and we’re sure the new home will be the perfect one for the show. What are your thoughts on the show finally making it to the screen?
Locke & Key Season 1 will span 10 episodes and is based on the best-selling comic book series.
It will recieve its premiere Friday, February 7, and you can watch the official trailer below.
The comic book adaptations have been coming thick and fast from Netflix over the past year, and that doesn’t look to change anytime soon with the upcoming release of IDW Entertainments supernatural horror series Locke & Key. Potentially a sleeper hit, Locke & Key is a series we’re very intrigued to see on our screens in February. We have everything you need to know about Locke & Key, including the plot, cast, trailer, and Netflix release date.
Locke & Key is an upcoming Netflix Original supernatural horror series based on the comic book of the same name by author Joe Hill. Prior to Netflix, the future of Locke & Key was left in doubt after the series was failed to be picked up by FOX in 2011. After being dropped by FOX the franchise it had been picked up by Universal for a trilogy, this project ultimately failed and it wasn’t until 2016 when IDW Entertainment was reported to be developing Locke & Key. Hulu had given the order for production of a pilot, but would later turn the series down before Netflix came along, ordered a full season and discarded the Hulu pilot.
Directing duties have been split amongst five different directors, including cult classic Cube director Vincenzo Natali. The series is the second project to come from IDW Entertainment, the first being the vampire-drama V-Wars.
When is the Netflix release date for Locke & Key season 1?
The first season of Locke & Key will be available to stream on Netflix on February 7th, 2020.
Will Locke & Key be available to stream in my region?
Not to worry, Locke & Key will be available to stream globally, so no subscriber will be missing out.
Will Locke & Key be available to stream in 4K?
Locke & Key will be available to stream in 4K for subscribers with a premium subscription. Otherwise, the series will still be available to stream to audiences in full 1080HD.
What is the plot of Locke & Key?
The three locke siblings, Bode, Tyler, and Kinsey, move to their ancestral home after the grim murder of their father, Rendell Locke. Discovering three powerful magical keys, the Locke children must use the power of the keys in a stand against an evil creature that wants the keys for his own devilish schemes.
Who are the cast members of Locke & Key?
The following cast members will feature in the upcoming series Locke & Key:
Where Have I Seen/Heard Them Before?
Jackson Robert Scott
It | Fear the Walking Dead | Criminal Minds
American Crime | Closet Monster | Falling Skies
Brimstone | Youth | High-Rise
Sunset Beach | Finding Home | Law & Order: Criminal Intent
American Vandal | Why Him? | Silicon Valley
Scandal | Mad Men | NCIS
Laysla De Oliveria
In the Tall Grass | The Gifted | iZombie
Step Up: High Water | Stan Lee’s Lucky Man | iBoy
Thomas Mitchell Barnet
Wayne | Romeo and Juliet | In the Dark
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Chapter | The Blues Brothers | The X. Files
Shadowhunters | Degrassi: The Next Generation | Saving Hope
Riverdale | Full Out | Slasher
Neighbours | All the Bright Places | Happy Together
The Tomorrow War | Step Up: High Water | The Walking Dead
In total there are six volumes of the Locke & Key, with a total of 30 comic issues.
The comic book series has a very distinct style, and the character designs, if changed may annoy plenty of fans. As you can see in the graphic below are the cast members that will be portraying the Locke family compared to their comic book counterpart.
From left to right: Jackson Robert Scott as Bode | Connor Jessup as Tyler | Emilia Jones as Kinsey | Darby Stanchfield as Nina
Fans can be very protective of the franchises they love, and tampering with character designs can be a grave sin they may find unforgivable. Darby Stanchfield (far right) will be portraying Nina Locke, which would be a dramatic change in hair colour from ginger to black.
We suspect any variations from the comic to series won’t upset a large number of people, but it’s always great when projects pay homage to the source material.
When and where did filming take place for Locke & Key?
All of the filming took place in Canada. Various locations were used in Nova Scotia and Ontario, including the cities of Lunenburg and Ontario.
Principal photography began on February 11th, 2019 and concluded on July 5th, 2019.
What is the episode count for the first season of Locke & Key?
The first season will be arriving with ten episodes, a typical number for a Netflix Original.
Each episode will be approximately 60 minutes long.
What is the parental rating?
For any concerned parent out there needn’t worry as Locke & Key will be PG-13.
Has Netflix released a trailer for Locke & Key?
With the release date just a little under a month away, the trailer for Locke & Key is now available!
Is a second season in the works for Locke & Key?
Very few shows are renewed upon release, The Witcher being the latest example.
This means that the future of the series will be determined by how well Locke & Key performs upon release.
If we take into consideration the number of arcs in the comic we could easily get three or four seasons of Locke & Key!

Apple this morning released a year-end retrospective of its Services business, which includes the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud and, new in 2019, Apple Arcade, Apple TV+, Apple News+ and Apple Card. In particular, the company highlighted new holiday 2019 records set on the App Store, which sees over a half a billion visits from people in 155 countries per week. To date, App Store developers have earned over $155 billion, Apple noted.
What’s remarkable is that a quarter of those earnings came in last year alone.
Apple also noted it saw a busy holiday season on the App Store, with customer spending reaching $1.42 billion between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve — a 16% increase over 2018.
On New Year’s Day, customers spent $386 million alone — a 20% increase over 2019 and a new single-day record.
The company confirmed the year’s top 10 free and paid apps and games, with YouTube, Facetune, Mario Kart Tour and Minecraft snagging the No. 1 position in their respective categories. (Full lists are below.) Apple Arcade, meanwhile, grew to include more than 100 games.
Beyond the App Store, Apple touted some of the major achievements for its other Services businesses, but not in terms of revenue generated.
For example, it said that more than 50% of Apple Music listeners tried the time-synced lyrics feature on iOS 13. It also noted that its Apple TV+ shows received Golden Globe and SAG nominations in year one. And it said Apple News now has over 100 million monthly active users in the U.S., U.K., Australia and Canada.
On the podcasting front, Apple noted its Podcasts app now includes over 800,000 shows in 155 countries. For comparison’s sake, its chief rival Spotify has over 500,000.
Apple Pay allowed entry to more than 150 stadiums, ballparks, arenas and entertainment venues around the world with contactless tickets in 2019, and users could ride public transit in Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Moscow, London and New York. This year, more cities are being added, including Washington, D.C., Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Foshan, plus several U.S. universities.
In terms of security, over 75% of iCloud users have enabled two-factor authentication, Apple noted.
“2019 was the biggest year for Services in Apple’s history. We introduced several exciting new experiences for our customers, all while setting the standard for user privacy and security,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, in a statement. “We begin the new decade with incredible momentum and gratitude to our customers who have shown such enthusiasm for all of our Services, and we continue to celebrate the work of the world’s best creators, storytellers, journalists and developers,” he added.

The remaining seasons of American Horror Story are due to leave Netflix in Australia in February 2020. Below, we’ll look at AHS’s history on Netflix Australia, why it’s leaving, where it’s heading and whether the removal of AHS in Australia will affect other regions.
For those who haven’t ever seen the show, American Horror Story is an anthology series that sees a similar cast each season reprise new roles in an often sick and twisted horror plot. The series is one of FX’s biggest shows and is popular all around the world.
American Horror Story had been getting new seasons up until 2018 but in March 2019, the first three seasons were removed.
As of January 2020, Netflix Australia only had seasons 4 to 6 streaming. That’s Freak Show, Hotel and Roanoke. All three are scheduled to leave on February 1st, 2020 meaning your last day to watch the remaining three seasons on Netflix is January 31st, 2020.
Why is American Horror Story leaving Netflix in Australia?
As with all removals on Netflix, it mostly comes down to licensing. In the case of AHS in Australia, it’s because Foxtel Now now owns the rights to stream AHS exclusively. That’s where all seasons are currently streaming at the time of publishing.
As for whether American Horror Story will return to Netflix in the United States. It’s unlikely. FX is now controlled by Disney who is in direct competition with Netflix and will likely stick with Foxtel Now for the immediate future.
Will American Horror Story leave Netflix in other regions?
This is something we simply cannot answer. Netflix’s contracts with FX have mostly stopped for new and many older shows. In most regions, Netflix has managed to retain FX shows that have Ryan Murphy’s involvement.
Apple says the App Store closed out the old year and greeted the new year by setting a couple of new records. App Store customers spent a record of $1.42 billion between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, a 16% increase over last year, and $386 million on New Year’s Day 2020 alone, a 20% increase over last year and a new single-day record.
“2019 was the biggest year for Services in Apple’s history. We introduced several exciting new experiences for our customers, all while setting the standard for user privacy and security,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “We begin the new decade with incredible momentum and gratitude to our customers who have shown such enthusiasm for all of our Services, and we continue to celebrate the work of the world’s best creators, storytellers, journalists and developers.”
Other highlights concerning Apple’s services during 2019 included:
Apple TV+ “made history” as the first streaming platform to receive multiple Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations in its launch year, and is the first and only streaming service to debut instantly in over 100 countries and regions.
Apple Music’s new time-synced lyrics feature was a highlight in 2019: over 50 percent of listeners have used it on iOS 13.
The Apple TV app now offers over 30 Apple TV channels — direct subscriptions to premium video services so customers can watch both online and offline, ad-free and on-demand, all in one app. The app is available on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, iPod touch, select Samsung smart TVs, and Amazon Fire TV and Roku devices, and will be available on LG, Sony and VIZIO smart TVs later this year.
The Apple Arcade game subscription service offers users unlimited access to a catalog of 100+ new, exclusive games, all playable across iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac and Apple TV.
Apple News draws over 100 million monthly active users in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada and has revolutionized how users access news from all their favorite sources. Apple News+ offers an all-in-one subscription to hundreds of the world’s top magazines and major newspapers.
Apple Podcasts offers free audio stories that entertain, inform and inspire, and now delivers listeners over 800,000 shows in 155 countries on more devices than ever before.
Over 75 percent of iCloud users are protected with two-factor authentication, an extra layer of security designed to ensure that no one else can access their account or data.
Apple’s services segment continues to become an important piece of the company’s revenue stream. During Apple’s last earnings call of 2019, the firm revealed that its services segment brought in $12.5 billion during the fiscal fourth quarter of 2019, up from $10.6 billion in the year-ago quarter and $11.46 billion in the third quarter of 2019. Services grew 18% year-over-year.
The latest Apple press release aims to underline the importance of its families of internet-based services — but is a little short on detail.
A historic 2019, Apple claims
Apple launched new services including Apple Arcade, Apple TV+, Apple News+ and Apple Card in 2019.
The PR reminds us of the “continued success” of the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud and more experiences only Apple can create and deliver.
The release confirms the Apple TV app will be made available on smart televisions from LG, Sony and VIZIO later this year.
The company also takes time to stress its commitment to privacy, security and quality, saying:
“Apple provides customers with the highest-quality services along with an unparalleled commitment to privacy and security, and offers creators and developers the opportunity to bring their creative visions to people around the world.”
Eddy Cue sets the stall for the decade
In the press release, Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services seems to be setting the scene for a 10-year services plan, saying:
“2019 was the biggest year for Services in Apple’s history. We introduced several exciting new experiences for our customers, all while setting the standard for user privacy and security.
“We begin the new decade with incredible momentum and gratitude to our customers who have shown such enthusiasm for all of our Services, and we continue to celebrate the work of the world’s best creators, storytellers, journalists and developers.”
What about the detail?
There isn’t a great deal of detail in the release, though it does mention that developers have earned over $155 billion in App Store sales sine 2008, “with a quarter of those earnings coming from the past year alone.”
Going into 2020, App Store customers spent a record $1.42 billion between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, a 16 percent increase over last year, and $386 million on New Year’s Day 2020 alone, a 20 percent increase over last year and a new single-day record.
The App Store is visited by over half a billion people each week, the company claims.
Apple Music – now in 115 countries offering over 60 million songs, making it a global platform to reach audiences.
Over 50% of iOS users have used the new time-synced lyrics feature introduced in iOS 13.
Apple TV+ is and was the first and only streaming service to debut in over 100 countries and regions from day one.
The Apple TV app now offers over 30 Apple TV channels — direct subscriptions to premium video services.
Apple News has over 100 million monthly active users in the US, UK, Australia and Canada.
Apple Podcasts offers 800,000 shows in 155 countries.
Apple Pay and Apple Card are seeing wide use, and we will see the former deployed in mass transit systems in Washington, D.C., Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Foshan.
Over 75 percent of iCloud users are protected with two-factor authentication.
One more thing
Signing off on its press release, Apple states:
“In 2020, Apple will continue to delight customers, collaborate with developers and creators, offering new levels of creativity, choice and innovation across original series and films, podcasts, music, news, games, apps, payments and unique experiences only Apple can deliver.”
