  • Post category:Other

Little Monster Media, a four-year-old audience-building agency for creators and brands in the online video space, has announced its latest hire.

Jonathan ‘Wally’ Weilbaecher has joined the company as SVP of strategy and audience development. In this role, Weilbaecher will oversee a portfolio of clients that Little Monster assists in all aspects of their YouTube strategy, including content development, production, audience development, and channel management. He will also lead the teams that manage Little Monster’s consulting and channel management clients.

A digital vet, Weilbaecher has previously held roles at top MCNs like Maker Studios and Studio71, where he helped creators improve their performance and audience growth, and also strategized digital campaigns and platform presences for linear brands like of The Tonight Show and Lip Sync Battle. He most recently served as VP of audience development, West Coast, for Group Nine Media, with a specific focus on building best YouTube practices.

“As we are creating and distributing more and more content on YouTube for mega-brands from our Monster Studios team, we wanted the top experts in the field to ensure those videos reached massive audiences,” Little Monster co-founder and CEO Matt Gielen tells Tubefilter. “Having Wally spearheading this effort to develop and create cutting-edge YouTube content that is designed to build audiences is a perfect fit.”

The company’s most recent launch is Monster Thumbnails — which it unveiled after testing more than half a million thumbnails over the years — to find out what works and what’s going to be ‘the next big thing’ in thumbnails in positioning. The product is available to all creators via scaling monthly subscriptions — from $165 for 10 thumbnails to $550 for 50. All of the thumbnails are made by Little Monster’s graphic design team and reviewed by senior strategists.

Amid Push To Build Platform, Editor ‘VSCO’ Will Now Let Members Publish Videos

  • Post category:Other

VSCO, a photo-editing app favored by the influencer set, has today added the ability to post videos to its own burgeoning platform. The ability to share videos is only available to VSCO members, who pay $20 annually for access to the app’s complete preset library and editing tools. (Non-subscribers have limited access to presets and tools, but cannot edit or post videos).

The launch is part of a larger mission for VSCO, which, in addition to serving as a utility for content posted elsewhere, is aiming to become a thriving platform itself. Its key differentiation, for now, from the platform it is most frequently associated with — Instagram — is that VSCO is devoid of ads, as well as devoid of public-facing likes, comments, and follower counts in a bid to foster a judgment-free community.

Videos have previously been able to be edited by VSCO subscribers — and the company says video editing usage has doubled over the past year. What’s new here is the ability for users to post clips to their VSCO feeds. The company also notes that this marks the first time audio will exist on VSCO, and it remains to be seen what types of usage or content trends take hold. That said, VSCO doesn’t offer the ability to add AR effects, text overlay, or music to videos in the vein of competitors; instead, its editing capacities are relegated to the same presets and filters it offers for photos.

VSCO says it counts over 20 million weekly active users. In its quest to become a leader in the video editing field, the company last month announced its acquisition of Rylo — a manufacturer of compact cameras renowned for their video stabilization tech. Rylo has also been working on mobile video editing tools. VSCO also operates DSCO — a GIF creation tool that it says is one of its most popular features.

The video-publishing feature is rolling out globally for subscribers today on iOS, before arriving on Android in coming weeks. VSCO also says it’s readying additional video tools, including the ability to ‘favorite’ and ‘repbublish’ videos. (Republishing is resharing someone else’s video on your feed — a feature that has long been requested on Instagram but has yet to be deployed).

You can check out some video-editing tips — as well as some of the different presents tools that VSCO offers — courtesy of senior product manager Katie Steigner right here.

Locke & Key

  • Post category:Netflix

It’s taken some time for Locke & Key to reach screens.

The comic book by Joe Hill has undergone a number of iterations, broadcasters, casts* and creatives before landing as a 10 part series for Netflix.

Producing is Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel, The Returned), along with Aron Eli Coleite and Meredith Averill (The Haunting of Hill House).

This is Supernatural meets Young Adult drama, without ever proving especially spooky or innovative.

It centres around a young family recovering from the death of their father as they relocate to a their ancestral home, Keyhouse, in Massachusetts. Mother Nina (Darby Stanchfield) hopes for a fresh start for her three children, troubled teen Tyler (Connor Jessup), indifferent daughter Kinsey (Emilia Jones) and cluey kid Bode (Jackson Robert Scott).

When they arrive at the grand Keyhouse, described as “very Norman Bates,” they meet Duncan (Aaron Ashmore), brother of their deceased dad / husband. He knows plenty about the house where he grew up, but shares little other than serving as property guide.

While mum Nina has flashbacks over the grisly death of her husband, the youngest family member Bode discovers an abandoned well and a ‘friendly’ voice from deep below. After discovering the house has keys with strange powers he finds a door with a portal.

Meanwhile teens Tyler and Kinsey are getting to know their new school pals in fairly pedestrian high school scenes.

Bode’s initial adventures may evoke Narnia-esque memories of The Lion, The Witch & the Wardrobe -not that there’s anything wrong with that- but he has the talent to carry it off.

However the wide-eyed spookiness of it all lands without enough tension. While things go bump in the night they are bumps well-traversed in this genre. It’s a long way from the genuinely creepy Haunting of Hill House, but no doubt pitching to a broader audience. Least spooky of all is the ghostly well-resident, Dodge (Laysla De Oliveira).

Unlock without too many expectations….

* both Miranda Otto and Frances O’Connor were once associated with the mother role.

Friday February 7 on Netflix.

Stranger Things: Is the End Closer Than We Thought?

  • Post category:Netflix

Netflix is reportedly closing in on an end date for Stranger Things.

We Got This Covered is reporting that the streamer is planning to split the previously ordered fourth season in two parts.

Rumors have been rife that Stranger Things Season 4 will be the last for the global phenomenon, and taking the split season approach could confirm that.

Eleven on the Phone - Stranger Things

With the cast locked in for the fourth season, it’s possible that the decision to extend the season in place of a fifth could allow Netflix to sign up the stars at their current rates.

However, it has been teased that both parts of the fourth season will be following the same storyline which would present a continuing narrative despite a break.

This could indicate that more episodes were required to bring the narrative to a satisfying conclusion. Then again, this is only a report, and Netflix could opt to extend the series for several seasons.

However, the Duffer Brothers, who make Stranger Things, have been vocal about not wanting the series to continue for much longer, and it makes sense.

Robin at Scoops Ahoy! - Stranger Things Season 3 Episode 3

Many shows continue much longer than they should, and Stranger Things clearly has a shelf-life when you consider the Demogorgon continues to pop up whenever the characters think it is dead.

From a storyline standpoint, Stranger Things Season 3 did set up for an endgame, with Eleven and the Byers leaving Hawkins behind in the aftermath of Hopper’s supposed death.

Bringing everyone back together one last time to take down the forces of evil could be the perfect way to conclude the series.

But there is still a lot about the mythology we don’t know, and that could further be established in an expanded fourth season.

Not In My House - Stranger Things Season 3 Episode 1

If this does turn out to be true and we are getting an expanded fourth season, it could mean we will be getting the first part sooner rather than later.

Netflix has been making big cancellation decisions of late, but if one thing is sure it’s that Stranger Things will end when the creatives behind the show think it is the right time.

A premiere date for the fourth season has yet to be announced, but look for Netflix to confirm or deny the We Got This Covered report soon.

The Mandalorian Set for Early Return as Disney+ Marvel Series Get Premiere Dates

  • Post category:Netflix

We have some good news for fans of The Mandalorian.

The second season of the series is coming sooner than expected. Disney CEO Bob Iger has announced that The Mandalorian Season 2 will begin airing in October.

The first season debuted in November 2019, so this means we are getting the sophomore run less than a year after.

Chasing a Bounty

Given the high-production values, many believed that there would be a Game of Thrones-like wait on the horizon.

But The Mandalorian Season 2 was already well into production before The Mandalorian Season 1 even launched.

He Has Spoken - The Mandalorian Season 1 Episode 1

The series was a critical success, with many lauding the ballsy attempt to expand the Star Wars mythology. The world immediately fell in love with Baby Yoda, who went on to become a cultural phenomenon.

Given that Disney+ only debuted in November, The Mandalorian was the flagship series, and everyone was talking about the Pedro Pascal-led drama.

As we look ahead to the future of the service, a slate of Marvel series is on the way. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier are first up, and will follow the characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as they fight crime.

The six-part series stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, and has a budget of $150 million, meaning that Disney will be shelling out big money for these shows that represent the next phase of the MCU.

An Order - The Mandalorian Season 1 Episode 1

Emily Vancamp will reprise her Sharon Carter role.

The series will launch in August, and will roll out weekly.

WandaVision focuses on Scarlett Witch and Vision from the MCU as they try to find a way to make their relationship work.

As fans are well aware, Paul Bettany’s alter ego died in the movie series, so we don’t quite know how he comes back to life.

That series is slated to bow in December.

Marevl Streaming 1

As for Loki, starring Tom Hiddleston, it is being held for 2021, which makes sense given that production only recently started.

Disney+ has proven to be quite the treat and has amassed 28.6 million subscribers since November. Hulu currently has 30.7 million subscribers, while Netflix has 61 million in the U.S.

Here is a clip teasing the Marvel shows.
